MEDICAL BILLING & CODING SPECIALIST PROGRAM
The Certified Professional Coder (CPC®)

This portion of the course provides the most up-to-date physician-based, outpatient medical coding information relating to assigning numerical codes to physician documentation for claim submission and revenue capture.

This portion of the course focuses on coding in physician office settings and trains the student to read a medical chart and assign the correct *diagnosis codes (ICD-9), procedure codes (CPT®), and supply CMS codes (HCPCS) in order to code for a wide variety of clinical cases and services. (*ICD-10 coding will take place at a later point in this MBC program.)

​Successful completion will prepare the student to sit for the CPC® *certification exam (*required by most employers to work assigning codes for payment on physician documentation.)
The Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC®)

This portion of the course provides the most up-to-date fundamental medical coding skills for an inpatient facility (hospital) setting.

Covers ICD-9-CM Vol. 1-3 (diagnosis codes for inpatient hospital stays).
Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be eligible to sit for certification exams as a CPC, CPBâ„¢ and CIC. The CPC and CPB exam costs and preparation are provided as part of the program and the CIC content will be reviewed so that the student may pursue the inpatient coding certification on their own as their career path dictates.

The Medical Billing and Coding Specialist: MBC program at Southern California Health Institute (SOCHI) provides the student with training in all areas of medical billing and coding procedures for both inpatient and outpatient settings. The program’s educational materials are provided by and in partnership with AAPC (formerly: American Academy of Professional Coders). AAPC is the nation's largest training and credentialing organization for the business and revenue side of healthcare. Along with training in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, the business of a medical office, ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding, and a capstone session; this program includes training and preparation in three major areas:

This portion of the course will provide the most up-to-date information relating to the health insurance industry and different reimbursement methodologies for correct claim submission.

This portion of the course and completion of the CPB® certification exam, will prepare you to handle claims within a medical billing department at a physician’s office, within a health clinic, health facility, other healthcare entity, or as a claims examiner for insurance carriers.
